Technologies Involved
In this section the current technologies used by CANSAS are mentioned.
KNOPPIX:
KNOPPIX is the main and original Live Linux CD based on Debian. KNOPPIX is the base used to build CANSAS. KNOPPIX has been selected to perform this task because of its features involved in hardware recognition, configuration wizards, easy multilingual support and, of course, because KNOPPIX enables CANSAS to be used without been installed in a local drive like a hard drive.
CANSAS makes use of all the Linux networking base tools included in KNOPPIX such as
bind9 or
dhcpd.

OpenLDAP
OpenLDAP Software is an open source implementation of the
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol used by CANSAS to store all the users of the system (Linux, Windows and CANSAS users) and the suitable network policies.

FreeRADIUS
RADIUS stands for
Remote Authentication Dial-In User Server/Service. FreeRADIUS is the premiere open source RADIUS server. It is fast, flexible, configurable, and supports more authentication protocols than many commercial servers.
CANSAS uses FreeRADIUS in order to do the authentication to access the different services

PoPToP
Poptop is the PPTP server solution for Linux. Ports also exist for Solaris 2.6, OpenBSD, FreeBSD and others.
PPTP stands for
Point to Point Tunneling Protocol. It was developed by a consortium including Microsoft and is used for establishing VPN (Virtual Private Network) tunnels across the Internet. This allows remote users to securely and inexpensively access their corporate network from anywhere on the Internet.
PPTP uses a client-server model for establishing VPN connections. Most Microsoft operating systems ship with a PPTP client, so there is no need to purchase third-party client software. PPTP has the additional advantage over other VPN technologies of being easy to setup.
CANSAS makes use of PoPToP in order to stablish secure connections between the clients and the CANSAS server. This is particularly important in WiFi communications because of is insecure nature and because PoPToP is an easier way to do that than with WEAP in Windows clients.
